Default Couple jailed for son's truancy

Couple jailed for son's truancy

An estranged couple have been given jail sentences for repeatedly failing to ensure their son went to school.

The 15-year-old, who can't be named for legal reasons, has one of the worst attendance records Flintshire Local Education Authority has ever seen.

The boy's 41-year-old father was jailed for 20 weeks, his 38-year-old mother has been given a sentence of two months.

It is the first such case in the county which has resulted in jail sentences.

The council says they also believe the couple are the first in north Wales to be jailed for the offence.

The couple, who live apart, had three previous convictions for failing to ensure regular school attendance.

Damien Gaskell, prosecuting for Flintshire local education authority, said it was "a systematic failure to ensure that the child received an education over a number of years."

He told magistrates that it was certainly not a victimless crime.

"The child is suffering because of a lack of education which is bound to affect his future work prospects," he said.

Two of those were the aggravated form of the offence which required knowledge that the child was not attending school, and was therefore subject to a potential prison sentence.

The boy previously had one of the worst attendance records ever dealt with in the local authority - just 17 per cent.

It had improved, but was only 30 per cent, Flintshire magistrates' court at Mold was told.

Magistrates told the parents they had abdicated their responsibility to ensure the boy received a proper education.

The court was told that while they were in custody arrangements had been made for the boy to live with a relative who had children of her own.

Well, I wonder if that little shit is feeling guilty now he's got his parents banged up, although if they're from the Mold area, probably not. I might be generalising but that part of Wales is, basically, a shit pit.

I think it's a very basic requirement for kids to attend school, not every single day of every year, we have all had 'days off ill" in the past, but say, 80% of the time should be a pretty easy requirement. His friends would be at school I'm sure, and what would any kid from that area want but to go and rob somebody's lunch money? Sure can't do that on the XBox!

Do you think that parental responsibility is being pushed a bit far, I must admit I'm a strong advocate of parents being in control, but of they simply can't or have no control (every parent has control, in my opinion, it's just whether they're arsed enough to exercise the right) should there be some sort of state boarding school where these little tyrants can be sent? I'm sure it would be more of a deterrent than anything else, and at least it would ensure these children have at least a chance of a non-criminal/state supported lifestyle.

There's not sufficient information about why he wasn't at school to make a judgement on it, to be honest. I remember a case a year or so ago on television where the mother kept the son off 3 days out of every 5 because she "couldn't cope and needed him at home" - in this instance the parent is at fault as the child needs the best education he can get if he's going to be able to live and eat in this world once he leaves school.

If the child is simply truanting, ie leaving for school then not bothering to arrive and the parents have done everything they can to change that, then banging them up is a bit pointless.
