Default Toddlers who dislike spicy food 'racist'

Quote:
Toddlers who turn their noses up at spicy food from overseas could be branded racists by a Government-sponsored agency.

The National Children's Bureau, which receives ?12 million a year, mainly from Government funded organisations, has issued guidance to play leaders and nursery teachers advising them to be alert for racist incidents among youngsters in their care.
This could include a child of as young as three who says "yuk" in response to being served unfamiliar foreign food.
The guidance by the NCB is designed to draw attention to potentially-racist attitudes in youngsters from a young age.

It alerts playgroup leaders that even babies can not be ignored in the drive to root out prejudice as they can "recognise different people in their lives".
The 366-page guide for staff in charge of pre-school children, called Young Children and Racial Justice, warns: "Racist incidents among children in early years settings tend to be around name-calling, casual thoughtless comments and peer group relationships."
It advises nursery teachers to be on the alert for childish abuse such as: "blackie", "Pakis", "those people" or "they smell".
The guide goes on to warn that children might also "react negatively to a culinary tradition other than their own by saying 'yuk'".
Staff are told: "No racist incident should be ignored. When there is a clear racist incident, it is necessary to be specific in condemning the action."
Warning that failing to pick children up on their racist attitudes could instil prejudice, the NCB adds that if children "reveal negative attitudes, the lack of censure may indicate to the child that there is nothing unacceptable about such attitudes".
Nurseries are encouraged to report as many incidents as possible to their local council. The guide added: "Some people think that if a large number of racist incidents are reported, this will reflect badly on the institution. In fact, the opposite is the case."
Yet another example of the UK going mad. I guess that means I'm racist as I don't like Chinese food and I like very few Indian meals. It means my stepson is racist as he doesn't like Indian, Chinese (and occasional even English!) Meals. My daughters are also racist as they don't like any kind of spicy food.

Totally ridiculous. I don't like leeks so clearly I'm anti-Welsh!

Just smile, nothing else annoys them as much.

Oh this could get good. What the hell? *mumbles* Christ, do people not have better things to do.

I clearly am anti-american then as I detest hot dogs, could care less about apple pie (blueberry please) and ain't really about moms. At least not mine or really anyone else's for that matter. I don't eat raw fish wrapped in seaweed, so I must be anti-Japanese. Plus I heard it will give you a worm. *shudders* Hell no! Now I do like English muffins. *smirks* So I must be in good with the English. I'll eat the hell out of some good Italian food. And I like Swedish fish rarely, but sometimes. *more smirks* Damn, I'm almost a United Nations food eating bitch.

Sorry, I'm feeling silly today.

It's bullshit like this which fuels real racism. I'm fed up of this casual and rather commonly - too commonly - used word. Using the word racism to describe an "incident" when a child does not like foreign food is a load of crap, I very much doubt they even know it's foreign food.

Even if it was a self concious decision, the person who wrote that report needs to learn how to speak better English as would is being described is xenophobia (if anything) NOT racism.

Perhaps as part of their "expenses" list for next year, "dictionary" will be found on it.

Little kids arent racist. Attitudes of little kids come from the people around them and what little kid doesnt turn their nose up at spicy food. I know all our kids did when they were little but now our oldest 2 will eat most spicy foods and our 5 year old still doesnt like spicy stuff. I think it an age thing. If little kids say someone smells it is usually because they do, at least to that child. Little kids say the damnest things, any parents here will have cringed once or twice when one of their kids have said exaclty what is on their mind.

ohhh yeah, I can so associate with that. Thing what gets me with this is people have different tastes. I don't like Chinese food, doesn't mean I don't like Chinese people. My 2 year old will eat anything you put in front of her, my five year old is fussy as hell.

I no a guy who grounded his son because he wouldnt eat tomato one day. This kid has never liked tomato and has never eaten it. This one day the father just had a brain snap and decided he didnt like it anymore. I thought it was stupid but I have always thought this guy was a bit of a control freak and this was probably a symptom of this.

How bizarre! Bit of an extreme reaction, I feel

Our 13 year old boy is a nightmare where food is concerned. There are some things he'll just decide he doesn't like for a day or two, then love it again (like baked beans) - in those instances we won't put up with it. But there are some things that he genuinely doesn't like - mushrooms, for example. I wouldn't ground him for not liking something just because I think he should.

The problem I used to have was the fact that my parent's meals usually consisted of things I didn't like - so I was pretty screwed from the start.

"Why aren't you eating anything" - well, duh. You may as well have a shit on my plate and ask me to eat that - you'd get the same answer.

I'm more easy going now-a-days and I like most things, as long as they're not overcooked. I don't eat mushy peas, parsnips, sprouts and other bitter green veg (apart from cabbage). I'm also not a fan of mushrooms but I wish I liked them!

Taste also change as you grow older so things you dont like now you might try later on and find you like it. I believe in always being willing to give everything ago. If you honestly dont like it after tasting it then fair enough
