Bill Bryson wrote a really interesting book:

Mother Tongue: The English Language: Bill Bryson: Amazon.co.uk: Books

about the origin of the English language, if I remember rightly, American English is more correct and true to the way the language was spoken at the time of the Mayflower!
In some cases anyway...!
