Default India lands on the Moon

Well, this is neat ...

Lunar landing has Indians over the Moon

Quote:
15 Nov 2008

NEW DELHI: There was exultation, a feeling that India had arrived, when the national tricolour was placed on the lunar surface on Friday night. With India's moon mission Chandrayaan already a reality, people are now wondering if the next step could be a holiday on the moon!

The Indian flag was planted on the lunar surface when the 35-kg box-shaped Moon Impact Probe (MIP) landed on the moon at 8.31 pm Friday night after being ejected from Chandrayaan-1, India's first unmanned spacecraft.

Newspapers expressed the excitement among the people with headlines like - "India leaves its footprints on the moon" in the Hindu, and a similar "Indian footprint on lunar surface" in The Statesman. The Hindustan Times had a patriotic - "The tricolour has landed", while the Indian Express termed it as - "India touches the moon."

All the papers termed the MIP landing on the lunar surface as a "giant leap, a first step". India is the fourth country to have landed a manmade object on the moon, the others being the former USSR, the US and Japan.

[...]

Superstar Amitabh Bachchan also couldn't stop showering praise on the lunar feat.

"This is a remarkable achievement from a country dubbed as belonging to the third world and one that is nomenclatured as a developing nation," Bachchan wrote in his blog Amitabh Bachchan .
There is an extensive wikipedia article on Chandrayaan-1 (link) that has a bunch of photos and graphics, and more information.

Quote:
Launched by India's national space agency the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The unmanned lunar exploration mission includes a lunar orbiter and an impactor. The spacecraft was launched by a modified version of the PSLV C11 on 22 October 2008 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh at 06:23 IST (00:52 UTC). The vehicle was successfully inserted into lunar orbit on 8 November 2008.

The Moon Impact Probe was successfully impacted at the lunar south pole at 20:31 hours on 14 November 2008.

[...]

Over a two-year period, it is intended to survey the lunar surface to produce a complete map of its chemical characteristics and 3-dimensional topography. The polar regions are of special interest, as they might contain ice. The lunar mission carries five ISRO payloads and six payloads from other international space agencies including NASA, ESA, and the Bulgarian Aerospace Agency, which were carried free of cost.

[...]

International reaction
  • NASA Administrator Michael D. Griffin congratulated Indian scientists: "Congratulations to our Indian colleagues on the successful launch of the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft, which is carrying two NASA instruments. India's first lunar mission will provide important insight."
  • US White House hailed India's maiden moon mission as "encouraging" and "exciting".
  • Former U.S. Presidential candidate and current President-Elect Barack Obama viewed the launch of Chandrayaan as a challenge to the United States. He stated "We are reminded just how urgently we must revitalise our space programme, if we are to remain the undisputed leader in space, science, and technology".
  • ESA Director of Science and Robotic Exploration Prof. David Southwood said: "This is a new opportunity for Europe to expand its competence in lunar science while tightening the long-standing relationship with India - an ever stronger space power. Joining forces is becoming more and more key to future successes. We congratulate ISRO on the successful launch and we are eagerly looking forward to science to begin”.

BTW, Chandrayaan means "moon-vehicle" in Sanskrit.

You mean all the McDonald's wrappers littering the lunar landscape?

Seriously, haven't I been reading somewhere (maybe even here at IaBT?) that America's alleged lunar missions were part of a big conspiracy, that it was all a made-up story and never really happened? Ah yes, here we are, "The Moon Landings" thread started by Hangman: (link)

do you know what REALLY pisses me off about india doing this though.....

I thought of it when making a reply on the US bashing thread, India is rife with poverty, people living like animals and struggling to survive, thats immediately evident by the amount of beggar children hitting tourists the moment they step off the plane, yet the government is pissing about trying to send things to the moon, and no doubt are spending millions and millions to do so, yet are happy to watch their people suffer???

What the hell is wrong with governments, if its not bloody arms its the sodding space race, what about putting the money they have into things that actually DO matter a bugger, like making sure their people can live to a reasonable standard......

Gives me a sphincter factor of about 7.

it wouldnt surprise me, they want to be the next big kid on the block and are flexing their muscles.....

I say we should invade france just in case......

Ok it has no relevance to what we're talking about, but its still a good idea

Seconded. And Axholio is probably right.
But I temper that by saying the US space program (from memory) was much smaller than the US military budget, and space exploration is a fairly positive aim. The US military budget could probably have dropped the equivalent of the space budget and survived. As maybe the Soviet one could have, I don't recall seeing any figures for that. My point of course being if we say "stop spending money on space" we might also think of other ways to tighten budgets.

That's a very good point.
