The BBC could face prosecution over obscene phone calls that Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand made to 78-year-old Fawlty Towers actor Andrew Sachs.

The controversial presenters left a series of lewd messages on Mr Sachs’s answerphone claiming, in shockingly explicit language, that Brand had had sex with his granddaughter, Georgina.

Mr Sachs, who played waiter Manuel in the classic sitcom, was left deeply upset by the crude calls – which were also broadcast to about two million listeners to Brand’s Radio 2 show. And Georgina’s distraught mother, Kate, said last night: ‘It’s awful.’

Doing this to the legend that is Andrew Sachs is also rather vile.

What kind of FW thinks that's funny, or clever to broadcast?
And isn't using a telecom service in that way a serious offence in most places? Put him in a cell with Bubba from Barcelona. He'll be laughing out the other side then.

What is amusing about this article from the Daily Mail... is that they are the only ones who said Saachs actually heard the messages. All the other reports state that it was his agent/aide who heard them, deleted them and complained.

I didn't hear the show itself so don't know exactly what Ross and Brand said. But according to Radio Two they never received any complaints from Saachs and Russell Brand apologised without any prompting from anyone on the show the morning after.

She's in her 20s I believe, and judging on Russell Brand's reputation a few years back when he was into drugs and lots of sex, he might well have slept with her.. anything's possible!

Andrew Sach's Grand daughter is apparently 23.

Have you noticed though, Brand is made out to be the bad boy again, I suppose it just fits his image, so automatically he gets villified by the press.

Yup. By all accounts Jonathan Ross was the one who shouted down the phone "he f***ked your granddaughter" or something like that when Russell was calling to arrange a telephone interview.

I didn't hear the show so don't know the true details of it. BBC have stated they've not received any complaints, it's oftel whos' blathering about doing something about it.

Irrespective of whether Sachs heard the message himself Ross, specifically, must have some sort of punishment handed to him - he was over the line and I don't think a mere apology cuts it.

I always harp on about respect for the elderly, and I'm particularly disgusted when they're disturbed by scallies and low-life scum - A 40 something year old father who's on more than £100,000 a year should know better. Especially how he's on TV!
