Default "No God" adverts on UK buses

Picked up from Another Forum (sorry, Hangie!) - BBC NEWS | England | London | 'No God' slogans for city's buses

The high points -
Quote:
Bendy-buses with the slogan "There's probably no God" could soon be running on the streets of London.
The atheist posters are the idea of the British Humanist Association (BHA) and have been supported by prominent atheist Professor Richard Dawkins.
The BHA planned only to raise £5,500, which was to be matched by Professor Dawkins, but it has now raised more than £36,000 of its own accord.
It aims to have two sets of 30 buses carrying the signs for four weeks.
The complete slogan reads: "There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life."
As the campaign has raised more than anticipated, it will also have posters on the inside of buses as well.
...
Professor Dawkins said: "Religion is accustomed to getting a free ride - automatic tax breaks, unearned respect and the right not to be offended, the right to brainwash children.
Even on the buses, nobody thinks twice when they see a religious slogan plastered across the side.
"This campaign to put alternative slogans on London buses will make people think - and thinking is anathema to religion."
...
But Stephen Green of pressure group Christian Voice said: "Bendy-buses, like atheism, are a danger to the public at large.
I should be surprised if a quasi-religious advertising campaign like this did not attract graffiti.
"People don't like being preached at. Sometimes it does them good, but they still don't like it."
However the Methodist Church said it thanked Professor Dawkins for encouraging a "continued interest in God".
Spirituality and discipleship officer Rev Jenny Ellis said: "This campaign will be a good thing if it gets people to engage with the deepest questions of life."
She added: "Christianity is for people who aren't afraid to think about life and meaning."
The buses with the slogans will run in Westminster from January.
Well, well! Fancy atheists exercising the right to advertising, like churches do! And Dawkins speaking out against the "free ride" (nice pun!) and the attitude that religion needs not engage in debate. Cheers to Rev. Jenny Ellis though.

The Christian Voice says "people don't like being preached at"! What they do is, of course, not preaching, I take it.

One fear is that it will attract retaliation from graffiti upwards. Maybe that in itself will serve to bring home what religious extremism is about. The ads should not be withdrawn because of the threat of retaliation, but at the same time, nobody should be endangered because of fanatical views. We already know it happens.

I know those of you who live in Britain complain about problems there, but I still think you are all ahead of the US in various ways, and this proves it. We are not near ready to have signs on buses saying that God probably doesn't exist. I don't think it would be safe to ride on a bus that had a sign like that on it. (And I'm not just talking about graffiti, but a *boom* happening to the bus.)

Same might be a threat in the UK.
Didn't billboards get set up in some US town by the atheist part of the community recently?

In Phoenix... although phillipic (a member here) who lives there went looking for the signs and couldn't find them in the locations listed that were near to him.

I'm not sure how the religious community will react to them here. London is an odd place at the best of times. You'd probably get more of an extreme reaction in the small villages and town I think.

Among intelligent people, the Rev. Jenny Ellis may be right, it will kick off some interesting debate.

Among the less bright it will kick off confrontations. Maybe it will bring out into the open the absurdly precious position of religion as described by Dawkins, and the arrogance of the fundamentalists.

I hope it causes huge amounts of controversy, and I hope that the creators dig their heels in the more people moan!

I'm looking at the specific slogan they want to use: "There's probably no God."

On the one hand, that's a rather wishy-washy way to put it, something that is almost a throw-away line. Contrast it with the in-your-face "God is dead!" from the 60s. On the other hand, for a lot of people even such a mild phrase will be shocking ... maybe even more shocking because it's so mildly stated.

It's certainly something that could make people think, and get them talking, though.

Good point. I am sure it will be expoited from pulpits. "The atheists aren't sure what they believe, but we know..."

To talk rationally about the problems in proving a negative, or about the simple acknowledgement that there may be other viewpoints, is not part of dogmatic assertion. Atheism's absence of dogma is to me a good thing, but that is lost to fundamentalist minds who need rules and assertions.
