Re: Russian woman put on trial in Dubai for drinking juice in public
I have sympathy for these kids, and I agree with John that it could have ended up much worse than it did. However, as the old saying goes, "ignorance of the law is no excuse".
Whenever I travel to a new place, I make it my business to educate myself about it before I go. And for sure, if I were going to a place ruled by Muslim fundamentalists (or any other variety of fundamentalist), I'd make sure to find out ahead of time about the rules and customs. Likely, I wouldn't even go there, knowing what might happen, or I'd be sure to consult local people who could keep me from putting my foot in it.
And they were there as tourists during Ramadan, the major religious celebration of the Islamic year. Did they not notice what was going on around them or care enough to find out? This sounds like either ignorance or laziness on their part. Which makes me ask, why were they there as tourists in the first place, if they weren't interested in the local culture?
