I'm inclined to give the French credit. Maybe they will win this one. Trouble is that French law is not really a good precedent in countries with British based law. Still, it may encourage others to prosecute.
Initially the followers of L. Ron Hubbard (blessings and piss be upon him) advertised that for money one could eventually attain the state of "Clear", which bestowed measurable powers. They soon realised this was a bad move when people asked to see one of these "Clears" display their super powers, which at best they could only do if nobody was looking.
Now I think it's dropped back to simply helping followers overcome their "engrams" and lead happier lives whilst relieving them of burdensome money. In other words nothing too tangible and if it fails the follower probably got it wrong. Compare conventional religion, if it helps.
