Did anyone else watch the opening ceremony? It was absolutely amazing... How we're going to beat that I have no idea...

It was. I wasn't planning to watch any olympics, not even the opening ceremony, but I switched on halfway through. It was amazing, I have nfi how they did all that pretty stuff with such precision. If they tried something like that in Australia, the participants would say 'o, you want me to run over there and wave that? Hang on, I've just gotta put down me beer and find me thongs.' (thongs are footwear here btw )

I saw the lighting of the flame bit, very cool!

Just smile, nothing else annoys them as much.

I missed that bit, should I be kicking myself? (although I'd probably miss)

I used to be such an Olympics fanatic, both Winter and Summer, from the 1970s on. I'd live and breathe the Games for the entire two weeks. Ah, those were the days ... I can hear the music now .... *dum* *dum* *dah dum dum dum* (Do they still use that music?)

I got rid of my TV in 2003, so I haven't been following the most recent Games as closely.

I like watching the Olympics. I think most people who are annoyed by the Olympics are annoyed by the commercialisation of it but look through that and watch it for the sport and the achievements of the athletes and you see it a different way. I agree the opening ceremony was very good.

This was a reply I made to a similar question on my own forum, thought i'd post it on this one, as my reply has an english stance on the olympics

Quote:
olympics....I really couldnt care less about them, and will not be watching any of it....

I tend to watch the winter olympics occasionally, as I like some of the events, but couldnt care less who wins..

As for what might be seen as being non patriotic..... Im all for being patriotic, but in a country where being a patriot has almost become illegal for fear of upsetting some arsehat who probably shouldnt be here in the first place, its rapidly getting to the point where I am no longer proud to call myself british...

Gods forbid you fly the flag for england...... its racist dont you know!!

Silly bloody government, silly country...... the way we're going we'll be the laughing stock of the world...so they can stick the olympics up their arse

Think ill go and become american, at least they aint frightened of a bunch of twats in europe......

With the lavish opening ceremony china apparently laid on and the obvious expense it took, its a shame they didnt just wave a flag and get on with, and allow those who needed the money to have a bite of the cherry
But then thats how the chinese government works....its a very divided system, and if the dying room documentry is to be believed in the face of the chinese governments denial (but then they would wouldnt they), they are also a pretty warped bunch of bastards.

I have to add, the athletes have nothing to do with any of this, and I wish them well in the competition, I just have issues with self serving governments and their corrupt officials (yes in this country also)

I say we should set up or own independent country and have policies in place that benefit everyone not just the fat cat billionaires.

Don't get me wrong I'd love to have bucketloads of money, don't we all, but not the arrogance that goes with it.

I have to agree with you there. Even with all the prettiness and awesomeness of the ceremony, I was still thinking 'Yes, but what about all those Chinese you made homeless in the lead up to the games, and what about the Tibetan issue, and ALL the other issues that keep building up where the Chinese government is concerned'. I also thought it was funny (if that is the word) that the UN asked Russia and Georgia to hold-off their war until the olympics were over. How inconsiderate of them to take some of the attention away.

I've always wanted to set up my own little country, where people help each other build their houses, share produce and look after each other's kids. But how do you ensure that everyone abides by such an idealism? You would either have to handpick a few people you know would behave and keep the country small and the weirdos out, thereby incurring attacks on your immigration policy (or lack of). Or it would have to be communist, and who wants that?
