A moderate earthquake, the largest in Southern California since 1999, struck 35 miles east of downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday morning. It swayed buildings and tossed food off grocery store shelves, but there were no reports of major injuries or damage it was 5.4 in magnitude, it was caught on jude judy and big brother!

This reminds me of my very first earthquake . I was newly arrived in the Pacific Northwest (from the Gulf Coast, which had its own challenges but not of this kind.) One night I was sitting on the sofa reading, when all of a sudden there was a *boom* and the doors and windows in the house started rattling. It went on for about twenty seconds.

I knew immediately what it was, and of course went online to find out what had happened. There'd been a 3.2 magnitude quake underneath SE Portland. Not the grandest earthquake ever, but to me it was a big event.

I loved the look on the man who was being bollocked's face when it started shacking - if he was religious imagine what went through his mind "OH NOES, GAWDZ SMYTIN MAH", mixed with a bit of "should I run?"!
